When LRF started making its way to the UK, nobody knew what tackle of how techniques would turn out. As a result, a lot of the tackle used was imported and expensive. A couple of years in however, the word 'fun' for me has totally overtaken any emphasis on tackle tartiness. The finer items of tackle are a joy to use and will ultimately help you catch more fish once you've enjoyed the delights of this style of light fishing, but the truth is that to get you started, there's no need to spend loads.

Over the past 12 months or so I've been on the lookout for rods in particular that will give anybody new to the style, something that is useable, light, sensitive and fun to use. It was thanks to a customer (thanks Paul H!) that I first saw the Awa-Shima rods and the Q-Lite Spin 220 is a little beaut' of a rod that unintentionally matched exactly what I was looking for. Combined with a sensibly light, quality reel, some reliable braided mainline and quality accessories, I think we now have the makings of a great little starter/novice package.

Rod: Awa-Shima Q-Lite Spin 220

A lightweight, lovely balanced rod representing absolutely amaaaazing value! Solid tipped and rated from 1-5g this one's super sensitive and perfect for casting small jigheads and tiny soft lures. Even a Goby will feel like a monster, but at the same time you'll have the power to land the odd beastie too!

Reel: Shimano Catana 1000FB or Shimano Nexave 1000FC or Shimano Exage 1000FC

1000 size reels look and feel tiny on first inspection, but truth be told they're the perfect match for this style of fishing. They hold more than enough braid of fluorocarbon, balance perfectly with the selected rod and have more than enough ower to land even large fish. Take your pick between three Shimano models to suit your budget.

Mainline: High Quality #0.6 PE Braid (or Power Pro 3kg if out of stock)

Named brand high quality braid. 100m spool is perfect for 1000 size reels associated with this combo. Thin, limp, strong! Far superior (and more valuable) than the Power Pro, this stuff makes this combo even better value! 

Leader material: Sunline Siglon FC 4lb - 30m

A brilliant value fluorocarbon leader material. Just use 2 or 3 feet of this tied to the end of your braided mainline.

Lures & Jigheads: Ecogear Pocket In Set

Containing two sizes of jigheads and 3 types of lure, these mega convenient kits provide everything you'll need to get you started! These include a mix of Ecogear Grass Minnow's, Paramax, Bug Ants, Straw Tail grubs and Power Shirasu (3 only). Colours can vary but I can fully endorse all of these lures having used them for the past couple of years.
