The XLayers don't really need an introduction any more. They're so, so, sooooooo good! Until about June this year they wer ecatually the only bait I had actually caught bass on - and I generally fished them after dark! Over the past year I've grown to have huge confidence in them. They just work! And it's not just me who finds this either.

Around here i tend to fish them on jigheads anywhere between 3g and 14g - usually at the lighter end of the scale. The trick is not to over-work them, and a lot of the French pro's would actually suggest just chucking them out and leaving them there, stationary! - they're that good!

I've come to quite like their aniseed - especially in a fresh packet. There are a number of reasons that contribute to their greatness though and make them worth spending a few extra pounds on: Their softness means that they will shake or vibrate at the smallest tremble of your rod tip; The in-built rattle is subtle, but placed in the tail will send off a gentle 'click' to alert fish to it's presence; The ribs on the under side are there to send out vibration and create more disturbance as it moves through the water; It's salt content and the smell I already mentioned make it a tasty mouthful that a fish will hold on to for longer than a cheap, plasticy alternative - giving you longer to feel and hit the bite.

You can rig them almost however you like, they're super versatile. As I mentioned, I prefer them on jigheads, but if the water is calm and clear then a weighted (or even unweighted) hook will have them sliding gracefully through the water.

Time will tell if and when I change my mind, but these are my current favourite soft bait!
